My Child Has A Diagnosis
ANXIETY DISORDER

Anxiety (sometimes known as worry) is the body’s psychological and physiological response to a real or perceived danger. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and is useful in keeping us safe and encouraging us to do our best, but when that anxiety persists and begins to affect a child's ability to attend school, interact with their family and friends, sleep and/or eat, then your child may be suffering with an anxiety disorder.

The symptoms of anxiety disorder include:

-
Avoidance of everyday situations or activities
-
Persistent worry/sense that something bad is going to occur
-
Sudden, unexpected panic attacks
-
frequent illnesses with no apparent cause
-
Inability to concentrate
-
Physical symptoms including headaches, dizziness or tummy pains
-
Preoccupation with perfection
-
A heightened need for reassurance or approval
-
A specific phobia
-
Selective mutism (not talking in specific situations)
-
Inappropriate behaviour such as tantrums or excessive crying
In untreated, childhood anxiety disorders may also trigger depression and challenging behaviour.

There are six major types of anxiety disorders:
generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder.
